Maryland's law went into effect in October 2000. The Information Technology Board's UCITA Committee is evaluating the need for further legislation. Virginia's law went into effect July 1, 2001 but it is NOT considered a national model. After passage in 2000, the Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS) appointed a sub-committee to consider amendments to the law before its effective date. Seventy-four amendments were proposed by businesses, libraries and non-profits. Twenty-four were accepted and referred to the Legislature for passage. The amendment package passed in early 2001.
